As a young boy I loved to read fantasy and dream about things this world likes to tell you don’t exist. Dragons, goblins, fairy’s and of course wizards. Tolkien, was and will always be my favorite world creator and bringer of life to the fantastic. My favorite characters usually were one of two classic molds. The young bumbling, clueless Parsifal who answers a call to an adventure so much greater then his comprehension of the world would allow and becomes totally transformed into something more than the sum of his parts. Or the isolated, studious and aloof wizard, battling always against dark forces, greater than himself, working with less than he should and always, always against time. For the purposes of this story will go with the wizards. Now lets think about what a wizard is, what do they look like, how do they act? Well first of all most wizards have long crazy hair, they don’t have extra time to spend on mundane cultural hygiene practices like the cutting of and keeping up of hair, they do wash though, usually in some natural water flow or outdoor shower. Also the wizard in question probably knew about how during the Vietnam war native Americans from tribes known for legendary intuitional skills, were the only soldiers during the war to be allowed to keep their hair long. This was because the first influx of recruits lost all their abilities like precognition and superb tracking abilities shortly after being recruited. The government looked into this and began a study. They discovered it was related to losing their hair. What they found is that antlers on a deer, antennae on a moth aren’t just there for looks. They’re like tuning forks for cosmos The only physical change that takes place for a recruit is their hair is cut, thus severing an extension our sense of the world around us. As wild as it sounds and after study and deliberation the military decided to bring in more tribal recruits, this time they were allowed to keep their hair long, they kept their abilities and were known during the war as “code breakers”.

A wizard also dresses differently, their sense of attire is more attuned to the personal functionality of their particular approach to life and work, rather than how they want to appear to others. Like a wizard will wear clothing that contains a bunch of extra pockets. This is because they want to carry more things on their person in case they run across a situation that requires that particular thing, device or whatever. Rather than the the classic wallet, keys and a phone, the wizard will have devices for measuring small things, or special eye pieces for looking deeper into the object of observation. They might also carry small writing pads for note taking and making calculations the old school way, with their brain. Or it may be for the storage of something like food, so they can continue working while reaching into that pocket for the food, all the while staying at their desk and continue working, thus being efficient and saving time. The wizards attire is also usually looser in fit and more able to flow with the movements of the body. “To be at ease in the body is to be at ease in the mind” is a very wizardly motto, I hear they especially like to wear kimonos, sometimes even all day.
Another facet of the many different attributes of a wizard is absolute dedication to their craft and particular field of study. Usually going way beyond the normal level of skill and understanding of even a very proficient tradesman or artisan. Once a wizard finds his or her field, they become utterly absorbed and dedicated to its mastery. Interestingly enough they actually never even make a choice. Wizards are born different, that difference colors their entire life. It doesn’t control them but it does influence them greatly. They have a certain polarization that allows to intensely feel when something is right and or wrong for them. So that being said it is up to all wizards to seek out and to discover what it is that they must spend their life becoming a master of. As most knowledge isn’t all kept in one place, this ensures that most wizards need to travel a lot and see the different places of the world to make sure they haven’t missed anything, “leave no rock unturned, travel broadly and delve deeply for the treasures that lie beneath or within.” could be another axiom of those wandering wizards.
There is so much more that could be said about the ways of wizards, but I haven’t the time, never enough time. In the case of our particular friend Mr. Thaddius Schrieberman it shall be known, that never was there a wizard more dedicated to great art of gem stone divining. The art of bring to life the hidden magic and soul of those treasures of deep earth and high mountains. Of extracting the love of things beautiful also hidden deep within most humans who have become afraid of nature and the nature of themselves. To make a person find the “moment”, right here and right now, not to worry about what’s coming and what they need to do. To find magic in the experience of recognizing and honoring beautiful things. This is what our mutual friend, the greatest wizard of Gemstones did and
He did it well. Goodbye Thad man, we shall meet again.
A fellow wizard.
